Microsoft has just released ‘Microsoft Safety Scanner’, a free portable standalone on-demand virus scanner for the Windows operating system, that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, worms, and other malicious software. The Microsoft Safety Scanner is not a replacement for active virus protection on your system, since it doesn’t provide any real-time protection. Its aim is just to provide additional means to run a virus scan on a Windows system, nothing more, nothing less, just like Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool, Dr.Web CureIt, and Avira AntiVir Removal Tool. For those possibly infected, who can’t access various online scanners, this on-demand virus scanner might be of benefit.

The program is very easy to use and does require installation. All you need to do is download and then run Microsoft Safety Scanner on your computer. It offers to you three options – ‘Quick Scan’, ‘Full Scan’, and ‘Customized Scan’. The Quick Scan method offers to scan for virus threats only in some selected areas of your system. The Full Scan, on the other hand, takes care of the entire system, including all the files plus the memory and the Registry. The custom scan allows you to scan a selected folder or drive.

Microsoft Safety Scanner is available free for both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows OS (Windows XP, Vista, and 7). The scanner has a size of about 70 Megabytes. But one big disadvantage is that, Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after downloading. You will have to download it again to re-run a scan with the latest antimalware definitions.
